I have a friend who uses a fascinating turn of phrase to describe the state of our presumed new government which I absolutely adore.
It’s fucking clown shoes.
By this she means it’s ridiculous to look at, exaggerated in its actions and there because someone made the choice to put on clown shoes.
And the parliament delivered by the 78.2% of voters who had a say on October 14 is currently all of these things. As the dust settles, we had to sit through a 20 minute talk by PM-Elect Christopher Luxon where he uttered the phrase “strong and stable government” 14 times as he reacted to the final results being released. During the election campaign he was told that you can’t run a country on slogans, but in the early days of his tenure he’s giving it the old college try.
